The Renegade Gardener

The Renegade Gardener “Don Engebretson” is one of America’s best-known gardening authorities who has been seen on PBS, HGTV & DIY Network. His opinionated work as a garden writer for national publications has won him six national writing awards!

Don will be doing daily presentations on the following topics…

Common Gardening Myths and the Mayhem They Cause

They are as common as deer, as persistent as Japanese Beetles and as tough to wipe out as Creeping Charley: erroneous myths about garden plants, products and procedures that cost gardeners time and money while actually harming the look and health of their yards, gardens and landscapes.

In this fast-paced primer, Don dispenses the false notions created by common gardening myths by replacing error with the truth about fertilizers, wood mulch, landscape fabric, chemical products, lawn mower settings, planting procedures, soil amendments and many more.

Yes, You Can! Landscape Design for Homeowners

What’s more DIY than gardening? Except homeowners discover that planting a shrub is one thing; creating a professional, functional design plan for their property is another.

This new presentation was created by Don as a result of consumer demand. “I want to landscape my own yard but don’t know the steps, or where to begin,” is something Don has heard a thousand times. Don takes your audience through every step of the design process and instills in them the knowledge and confidence they need to create the beautiful yard, garden, and overall landscape they have always wanted.

Straw Bale Gardening

Straw Bale Gardening is a simply a different type of container gardening. The main difference is that the container is actually the straw bale itself, held together with two or three strings, the outside crust of the bale serves as the container.

Growing a successful garden is difficult even if you have terrific soil to plant your garden into, but with poor soils it can be virtually impossible. Straw Bale Gardening allows anyone, even those with the worst soil conditions, to grow a terrific garden that is productive and much less labor intensive. Straw bale gardening works very well from areas inside the Arctic Circle, to the heat of the Caribbean. If you can find bales of straw, or similar bales of tightly compressed organic material, you can garden this way.

Using many of the tips and tricks Joel offers in his classes and the written material he offers as a guide to new straw bale gardeners, you are guaranteed to be successful with your first straw bale garden experience. You won’t want to miss what Joel Karsten has to say!
